DTE Demand Response
What is it?
A period of high electricity demand when utilities ask customers to reduce their usage to relieve stress on the power grid.

- Utility predicts high demand due to factors like extreme weather.
- Utility calls a Demand Response Event.
- Customers are notified and encouraged to reduce electricity use.
- Some programs offer automated reduction (e.g., adjusting thermostats).
Benefits:
- Demand response rate is offered as a rider alongside your standard rate code, giving a discount on the cost of electricity to reflect participation.
Six Additional Energy Demand Response Programs to Choose From:
These programs are less of a commitment, and easier to follow.
- Smart Currents: Free smart thermostat provided. Thermostat automatically adjusted during events (up to 4 degrees) for an annual $25 bill credit.
- Smart Savers: Requires existing smart thermostat. Automatic adjustments during events (up to 4 degrees) for an annual $50 bill credit.
- Cool Currents: For customers with central air conditioning or heat pump. Discounted rate in exchange for allowing short interruptions during high demand. Save up to 32% on the cooling portion of your energy bill.
- Water Heating Service: Discounted rate for water heating in exchange for allowing short interruptions during high demand (requires separate meter). There may be temporary interruptions of electricity to your water heater for up to four hours per day. Minimum of a 30-gallon electric water heating tank, and commercial locations with a minimum of a 40-gallon electric water heating tank are eligible
- DTE Smart Charge: Manages EV charging to off-peak hours for a gift card reward worth up to $100. May shift charging during on-peak hours. Eligible if own electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle from Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, or Tesla and perform most of charging at home within DTE Electric’s service territory.
- Dynamic Peak Pricing: Offers lower rates during off-peak hours and weekends. Customers are charged a high rate during Critical Peak Events (up to 14 per year). Eligible if a DTE electric customer and have a smart meter
Additional Details:
- Specific program requirements and benefits vary.
- Customers are notified before a Demand Response Event.
- Participation is voluntary (except for Dynamic Peak Pricing which requires a 12-month commitment).
- Most programs allow customers to opt out of individual events.
